The Imperial German Eagle is featured in cobalt rustical, heavily-detailed relief, on this stein's center front. The Imperial German Eagle originates from an emblem believed to have been used by Charlemagne, the first Frankish ruler crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope in 800 A.D., and was derived from the Eagle Standard of the Roman army. The side panels feature the Coats of Arms of all the German States. The domed, turned pewter lid is adorned with decorative relief banding.
